I heard someone say they expected people to “summer hard” this year since no one could do much of anything last summer. From what I have seen so far, those words are very true. It seems the highways are busier, the lakes are buzzing with more people, boats, and jet skis than ever before, and the restaurants that are open are jammed packed. People are indeed summering hard this year.
As we try to jam two summers’ worth of fun into this year it is important that we also pay attention to the fact that bad guys are more active than ever when it comes to cyberattacks and fraud schemes. Each day there is a new ransomware attack hitting the news; health care providers are being crippled by these attacks that take control of the company’s networks, data, or electronic health record systems. What cyber-criminals lost in 2020, they are making up for in 2021, and it appears no provider is immune.
The moral of this story is that while you are packing your summer with fun and being around people once again, don’t forget to pay attention to the potential vulnerabilities of your organization, and try to be one step ahead of the bad guys. Cybercrime does not take the summer off!
Summer hard my friends!
